Default 1978-1988 G-Body EFI Fuel Tanks

Thanks for the info from Phil's "MalibuRacing " Father/Son project at www.Maliburacing.com

His post on his gas tank swap was swapped over here due to its usefullness for 10 years of G-Bodys.

"I am only going to use one of the stock lines as the vent line. I'm going to run new lines using push-loc hose and AN fittings.

I'm supposed to get all the pieces in tomorrow from mail order. I bought Russell 640850 (3/8" fuel rail to #6 AN) and Russell 640860 (5/16" fuel rail to #6 AN). Here's a picture:

I will use 2 of these these Earl's 991955 fittings to go on each end of a "OEM" frame rail type fuel filter. It was a cheap alternative and the filter will be an easy to find replacement item:

Here is the way I modified the stock TBI pickup from a 4.3L Monte Carlo:

The top line is the supply line. I used the stock 16MM fitting with an Earl's 9894DBJERL adapter to convert to #6 AN. The middle line is a return line. It was "necked" down to smaller than 5/16", so I removed that portion. I then went to a local industrial supply house and got some fittings. I added a 5/16" compression fitting to #6 AN conversion for the return line. The bottom line is the vent line. I will connect this to the stock 3/8" fuel line and run it to the engine's fuel vent line (I believe it is called the evaporator fitting on the intake). Of course, I have a high pressure fuel pump in the pickup unit.

I got a new fuel tank from O'Reilly's for a 1987 Monte Carlo with 4.3L TBI engine. It is baffled for EFI. It fits perfect with no modifications whatsoever. I've heard others say they had to tweak the filler neck, but mine fits fine:"

More From Phil's build

Here's the fuel rail adapter fittings, Russell Performance P/N 640850 for the 3/8" feed line and P/N 640860 for the 5/16" return line:

This is with the #6 AN push-loc fittings and #6 hose installed:

Kinda hard to see, but here is the fuel lines running underneath the heater box. I believe I should have plenty of clearance from the manifold and exhaust pipe. Right now I have it tie-wrapped in place. I bought some hose hangers, but they were too small and crimped the line (even though they are supposed to be for #6 AN line). So, I gotta get some more that won't crimp the lines:

Here you can see the lightweight "IceMember" in the foreground and the fuel lines running along the frame rail in the background:

Closer shot. Again, I plan on getting fuel line hanger clamps to replace most of the tie-wraps:

Over the rear frame rail:

This is above the rear axle, which is the trunk floor directly in front of the fuel tank. You can see the OEM style fuel fiter with AN adapters on the supply line. The other line is the return line:

Here is where it goes and connects to the tank. The hose dangling is the vent hose, which was not connected when I snapped this shot. Also notice the red wire that will run to the front to power the fuel pump:

Here is the tank bolted in with a few wires and hoses left to connect at this point:

Here's a shot to show how well the filler neck fits:

While we were out there, I test fitted the drivers side F-body exhaust manifold (Ebay specials). Perfect fit!:

Looking at the info that John Bzdel posted..I used a baffled tank out of a 4.3 EFI Monte and the walbro GSS340 pump.

However, I took a different route for the supply and feed since my neighbor suggested I use his dorman fuel line kit for nylon lines.

The reasons were simple..

1. Ease of connect\disconnect specifically for the fuel filter\regulator.

2. Ease of routing the length of the car.

3. No need to alter the stock fuel rail connection.

Looking at the Fuel sender I knew that I was going to have to replace the lines as they not only bottleneck on the return where the hose connects but also are severely crimped\reduced where they protrude through the base of the assembly.

The replacement for the fuel feed was easy to sweat in. However, the return required some thought as to replace the entire return would require I rework the support for the fuel pump as they are one and the same.

What I decided to do was to close off the old return and leave it in tact for the pump support and then plumb the new return behind it.. Its hard to see from this picture but the return line is behind the old return\pump support.

I used a flaring kit to put the stock flare for the GM quick connect on the 3/8 feed and 5/16 return lines.

Since I have an LS2 from a GTO I dont have a return line on my fuel rail.. With this in mind.. I placed the regulator\filter as close to the tank as possible by putting it where the stock lines anchor to the rear of the car just forward of the gas tank.. This will reduce the distance the fuel will have to return and should make the pump operate more efficiently. I was able to get the heat shield in as well by spacing it out a bit but just took it off to snap a picture.

The vapor line I left alone as I decided to leave the entire vapor line route for the car in tact ( you will see the stock vapor line in the picture of the fuel filter\regulator)

Is this retro into a GBody? What motor mounts did you use? Do the truck accessories and intake fit under the stock G-Body hood. Can you take some pics front and center with the hood open and of the motor mounts?

This site is AWESOME! Thanks. I hope to post some pics of mine when I start swapping in parts!!!!

This is a G-body (79 Malibu)
Here is the link to the thread that contains other links that sum up the main points of this father/son install from the MalibuRacing.com web site From the looks there were not any clearance issues..
