Here is a break down of Gen III and IV engine GM RPO code and engine Spec's of each. This should allow everyone to correctly ID each and to call them by there correct RPO code and not just the generic "LS1" or "LSX" name.

Can you add some more info to the table? I assume that the differences between the various 5.3's has to do with iron vs. aluminum block, or the multiple displacement system. That would be good info for the table.

Are there differences in HP as well?

This is a big learning curve for me, I'm looking to swap a 5.3 for a Crossfire in a '84 Vette.

Buzz.. If I can get the time i will add Block and Head info as far as Iron/Alum.

But in general, all LSx (1,2,6,7,A,etc) will be Alum, Only a few Truck block were Alum (SSR, TBSS ?) the rest were all Iron blocks.

Heads, I will have to do some research.. but if anyone has input to it.. pass it on and I will update, maybe along with the Head numbers (ie, 318, 241, etc)

from Wikipedia, I have one of these going into a 63 impala with a T56

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Vortec_engine

"The L33 was an aluminum block version of the LM7, and was referred to as the Vortec 5300 HO in marketing materials. Power increased by 15 hp (11 kW), to 310 hp (230 kW), over the LM7, and torque was unchanged. It was only available on extended cab 4WD pickup trucks. Only 25% of trucks made in 2005 had the L33 engine.

L33 applications:

2005-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD
2005-2007 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD

another gen III engine with alum block was the LM4

Gen IVs include LH6 LC9 L76 and L92

I have the GM Technical Installation Guide, the "How To Swap Chevy LS1, LS3, LS6, LS7 Engine Into Anything" book, the "LS Engine Swap Wiring Book", by F-Bodies, Inc., and of course the Street & Performance tapes & You-Tube videos. All great stuff. But, can always learn more.:)

The table that I put together was just put together by browsing the internet, Magazine and other media sources. Wikipedia is a good starting source.

One of these days, I might get around to finding more information and update the table or create some new one. As I know the data is getting a bit old.. LOL..

2003 escalade lsx376
10-21-2010, 07:42 PM
Dear Retro,

I have a 2003 escalade with a seized LQ9. I know I can rebuild the engine that I have, but that wouldn’t be as cool as having an LSX in the caddie. I have been trying to figure out if the swap is possible. I think I've figured out a few of the complications I might run into during the project, but I know there are a lot more. I can get a piggy back computer to fix the reluctor wheel issue and a FAST intake for the manifold issue. I could fabricate some kind of coil pack mounts for the valve covers. I need to know if the stock ECM will run the engine. I still want to register the vehicle for highway use and need it to pass emissions and not throw any DTC codes. I believe the same ECM that runs my 6.0L also runs the 5.3 and 4.8 so I think it can adjust the fuel map accordingly. Please help me figure out what all I need to address to make this swap a reality. Thanx, Paul.

What do you consider a "LSX", that term is used two ways.. one as a generic term for all Gen III and Gen IV engines.. two.. many manufacturs have banded there products LSX.. GM sells a bare Block for Aftermarket.. called the LSX block..

Since you have a Gen III / LQ9 engine in your caddie now. You could pertty much put any current 24x Reluctor wheel based engine in and with some minor tweeking of the current ECM and you could most likely pass any SMOG test and still be legal. You would need to use your current LQ9 accessories and sensors.

So, what are you calling LSX ?

Another good source of info is the GM Powertrain archives. There is info for every LSx engine they have produced...car or truck. Power graphs, photos, summaries of yearly changes, and other important data.

It seems you have a lot of information can you make a library and post all your info there where we can go and look it up. Also do you have a store? Or is there a list of your services?
thanks in advance
