1971 Chevelle Malibu Retro Swap with a LS1 and T56

This was a Ground up Restoration with new technology modifications. Current state is "Done!" with a few more updates planned!
Driveline is from a 99' Z28, Engine is a 5.7L LS1, behind is a Viper T56 and GM 12 bolt rear with 4.11's. Early BRP Style Adapter plates with Energy Suspension Motor and Trans Mounts.
Suspension is all Hotchkis with Tube front A-Arm with B-Body Spindle (12" 1LE Sloted rotors and B-Body brakes), Springs, Front and Rear Sway Bars, Rear Re-enforcement bars for the Upper Control Arms and Upper and Lower Rear Control Arms. The Frame and other parts have all been Powder Coated.
Fuel System is Stainless Steel 3/8" hard line with AN -6 fittings and SS Flex hoses as required. 99' Vette Filer/Regulator. Gas tank will be from a 95' Impala with a Racetronix B-Body kit (Walbro 255 pump and Racetronix's Wiring kit). Edelbrock Swap Headers and Flowmaster 2 1/2" H-Pipe and 40 series Mufflers.
Body has been painted in two tone Silver and Pewter with a Cowl Induction hood. Under body has been painted with POR-15.
The Interior is stock with only the Front Bench Seat and the Head Liner replaced.

With the exception of the Body work, paint and a some of the major Welding, I took on this build without anyones help. This included removing and putting the body back on the frame. I was a one man build.

Here is a few pictures of the Deconstruction, it started out as a take a few think apart to clean and refinish and then put it back together for a quick restore.. we 4 years later.. it was done..!

After a few month of cleaning, grinding and sanding.. I was ready to start to put it back together with all of the part that I have been collecting and storing. It was suppose to be a built SBC but after sitting around and BS' with the guys over a few (too many) beers, it was hey, let do a LS1 swap.. well, as you will see the rest is history.

Here is the Frame back from Powder Coating, got a great deak, $380.00 for the frame and the Radiator Support. Most of the other small parts I powder coated myself with a spare Oven and a Eastwood Powder Coating Gun.

Now that the Frame has been powder coated, it is time to start assembly.
Suspension is all Hotchkis TVS with Tube front A-Arm with B-Body Spindle, these B-Body had the option of HD brakes which comes with 12" front Disk brakes. I was able to use front rotors from the 3rd gen Camaro 12" 1LE Sloted rotors and as able to use standard B-Body brakes calipers.
Spring were Hotchkis 1 1/2" Springs lowed
Front (1 3/8") and Rear Sway Bars
Rear Re-enforcement bars for the Upper Control Arms.
Hotchkis Upper and Lower Rear Control Arms.
The rest of the Frame parts have all been Powder Coated.
Rear Suspension (note a 10 bolt rear in place in the picture, but a 12 bolt was to be added before completion)

After many hours of grinding, sanding and stripping, the body was almost ready to be put back on the frame, but I 1st repaired any rust on the floor pan, I was only a few minor holes and then finished with POR-15.

Well, after many more months of cleaning and refinishing parts and many hours of trial fitting of the part for the re-assembly, I had found a deal for a 99' Z28 LS1 and T56 wtih all accessories, wiring and PCM for $3,500.00.

I know that this will not be the last time that it get dropped in and pulled out, The engine and trans must have been in about a dozen times durning this porject. Now that it has been dropped in for the 1st trial, I had a good I idea of what I was in for.
I had done a lot of Resarched of them many other A, F and X body swaps to learn and get ideas of how to go forward with my project.
I have talked to Phil a few times at BRP, Read many of JohnB's post and threads, even had a few email to John too. About the time I started my LS1 swap, Stealth71 started his project thread and I was able to feed off of his project.

Before I did the trial drop in, I had fab up some adapter plates out of 1/4" steel for the Motor plate and 1/8" for the Clutch Master bracket. I had picked up some Energy Suspension Motor mount, a set of each for the Tall / Narrow and Short / Wide.

I finished them by Powder Coating them.

I wanted to see what the differents were in the S&P plates and the early style BRP plates, so when I fab them up, I created a duel pattern plate that had both S&P and BRP engine mount location. I then mount the plates on the engine.

I dropped the engine in two times to see what would suit me the best and then also check the AC Compressor, but as everyone found out, you can not use the S&P plates with the OEM AC Compressor, as they come into contact. Also the stock F-Body pan would not work with the S&P plates, as they came into contact with the cross member.
So. I then went with the BRP Early Style plates cause I wanted to retain the OEM compressor for both the Factory look and cost.

After bolting all together on the Engine, I tapped up the area were the frame mount would be so that I could mark the new holes. dropped the engine in. I marked the new holes.

After checking the engine location, I found that the F-Body pan did fit but was very tight.

At this point I thought that the pan and cross member was a bit tight and I was worried about heat. This is when I decided to check on notched pans and other options.
I attempted to notch my F-Body pan, but had bad luck, the metal was to oil soaked and the welder could not get a good bead and seal as the oil cause popping and other problem. So I looked at other options.

I then called a few buddys at the local Chevy deal and had them look around the area for a CTS-V pan. They found two pan at a Caddy dealer that had sold some create engines to Roy Brizio who swapped them out for F-Body pan. I was able to pick up one compared and did a trilal fitting. After talking with Phil at BRP, I picked up the second one for him and shipped it to him for his research for his kits.

Here you can see both the front and the area that transfer down from front to rear is deeper and is why a CTS-V pan will require the engine to sit up a bit more. I will show a picture of the front of the pan and the center link later.

Now that I had some trial fitting of the engine a trans, I started to work on the trans crossmember and trunnel. After some trial fitting and opening up the trans tunnel. I found that the F-Body trans shifter was in the wrong location for my Bench Seat.

And at this point I figured out the shifter was going to be a problem. I started some research to figure out something like using the McLleod Shifter Relocation kit and shifter or as someone suggested using a Viper Configured T56 which had a more forward location.

I was able to find a Viper T56 that was suppose to be converted to Chevy Input front, I then sold the F-Body and picked up the Viper one, It has been rebuilt and had a F-Body input shaft, but what I found out was the they didn't switch the adapter plate and that the GM Throwout Bearing would not bolt up.

F-Body Bellhousing was the same bolt pattern at the adapter plate, I found out that the T56 casing are all the same as far as bolt patterns, just the front adapter plate are used to mate to Fords, GM or Vipers. As well as the Tail shaft and housings.

A Viper one is different in size and clocking of the bolt pattern. Researching my options I found that the F-Body bell housing would fit the Viper Adapter plate but I would have to modify a F-Body Throwout Bearing.

Now that I got all of the fab'd up and back in, note the Shifter location now..! It cleared my Bench seat. Don't you just love my shifter handle..! LOL.. I later picked up a Hurst Billet Shifter and a Shifter handle that worked out to bend correctly for my Reach and Bench Seat.
